About the position

The Aviation Technical Specialist I position at the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) involves working in either the Planning and Environmental Section or the Grants, Compliance and Inspection Section. This hybrid role requires the specialist to assist in the development and updating of Capital Improvement Plans for public-use airports, conduct inspections, and ensure compliance with federal and state regulations. The position is crucial for maintaining aviation infrastructure and safety standards across assigned airports.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the development and updating of Capital Improvement Plans (CIPs) for assigned public-use airports.
  • Assist communities on technical aspects of terminal and visual navigational aids and GPS approaches.
  • Coordinate and review Federal 7460-1 forms for on-airport development.
  • Review preliminary studies or surveys and cost estimates for project feasibility and funding.
  • Assist airport sponsors with development, coordination, and review of airport master plans and layout plans.
  • Review and approve environmental documentation as required under applicable laws and regulations.
  • Coordinate with FAA and report comments to the State Historic Preservation Officer.
  • Identify aviation infrastructure issues for maintenance, repair, safety, and operational needs.
  • Ensure project selection and continuity through collaboration with stakeholders and project teams.
  • Understand and apply technical manuals to develop specifications for aviation projects.
  • Review Independent Fee Estimate results to confirm consultant fees are acceptable.
  • Learn about funding components and project selection scoring processes for federal and state funded projects.
  • Utilize various software platforms to review and comment on documents.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science Degree from an accredited college or university.
