About the position

The Avionics Build Reliability Engineer at SpaceX plays a crucial role in enhancing the reliability of avionics hardware from design through production and operation. This position involves collaborating with various engineering teams to apply data-driven insights for improving product reliability, conducting failure investigations, and implementing process controls. The engineer will work in a hands-on environment, engaging with both office and factory settings to support SpaceX's mission of making humanity interplanetary.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with core electrical design engineering and avionics manufacturing teams to improve product reliability by applying best practices and establishing repeatable process control.
  • Utilize schematics, test equipment, and inspection processes to conduct PCBA test failure investigations and perform structured root cause analysis.
  • Identify opportunities for risk reduction and removal of complexity in designs and processes to improve manufacturability.
  • Monitor the yield rate of products through regular build quality reviews and drive corrective action for products not meeting design specifications.
  • Contain suspect or known non-conforming product, providing guidance to quality inspectors and engineers to assist in quarantining and rework activities.
  • Challenge requirements to determine value-added processes and work with core avionics to establish minimum viable acceptance testing for flight hardware.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, hardware engineering, engineering physics, or other engineering discipline.
  • 1+ years working with digital or mixed-signal designs, using oscilloscopes, digital multimeters, power supplies, and/or soldering equipment.
  • 1+ years in a manufacturing, reliability, and/or design engineering role.

Nice-to-haves

  • Demonstrated experience troubleshooting/root causing electrical hardware failures.
  • Ability and willingness to obtain a Top Secret clearance.
  • Master's degree in electrical engineering or equivalent engineering discipline.
  • 2+ years of industry experience working with electronic hardware.
  • Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills.
  • Demonstrated application of process controls in high-volume manufacturing, test, and quality environment.
  • Programming experience in Python/SQL/PowerBI with an emphasis on data analysis and automation.
  • Knowledge of quality tools such as Lean principles, Six Sigma, root cause analysis, and PFMEA.
