About the position

The Commercial Underwriter II role is a critical position within Western Alliance Bank, responsible for the underwriting and portfolio management of existing and prospective commercial client relationships. This role primarily focuses on underwriting credits on a cash flow basis, which includes a mix of investment grade and non-investment grade equivalent credits. The position encompasses both the approval of new transactions and the ongoing monitoring of credit activities. The Commercial Underwriter II will manage a portfolio of Commercial & Industrial companies with revenues exceeding $20 million, providing both general and specialized industry coverage. In this role, the underwriter will analyze transactions as part of the screening and underwriting process. This includes evaluating the business rationale, cash flow projections, financial health, industry dynamics, management capabilities, key risks, covenant analysis, and repayment strategies. The underwriter will assess new credit requests, balancing risk and return to make justified recommendations. Responsibilities also include underwriting new credit requests, amendments, and conducting annual reviews through the internal approval process in collaboration with risk partners. The position requires the development and maintenance of a deep understanding of the assigned portfolio of clients and the industries they operate in. The underwriter will also need to be well-versed in the full spectrum of banking products and internal credit policies and procedures. Participation in credit due diligence with clients is essential, as is the establishment of appropriate internal risk ratings for clients, along with the implementation of accurate risk rating adjustments throughout the loan's lifecycle. Ongoing portfolio monitoring routines will include periodic financial assessments, covenant compliance checks, and amendment activities over the life of the loan. Additionally, the Commercial Underwriter II will participate in team-specific and enterprise-wide strategic projects aimed at supporting business goals, operational excellence, and initiatives to simplify and improve processes.
