About the position

The Assistant Vice President of Corporate Accounting Services at The Hartford is a key leadership role within the Corporate Controllers organization. This position is responsible for overseeing various areas within the Accounting Services team, ensuring compliance with accounting policies, and leading financial accounting close and reporting processes. The AVP will act as a trusted advisor to senior leaders, champion innovation, and manage change effectively within the team while fostering a culture of diversity and continuous improvement.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a key leader and primary support for the VP of Accounting Services.
  • Define, manage, and drive the monthly/quarterly/annual financial accounting close and reporting process.
  • Ensure accounting is completed in accordance with accounting policies.
  • Remove roadblocks and resolve issues impacting financial reporting processes.
  • Evaluate controls impacting financial reporting and ensure appropriate documentation for SOX and business controls.
  • Provide oversight of the monthly Accounting and Reporting Process, including benefits accounting and reporting.
  • Review and oversee results of the Corporate segment, including debt and equity reporting and EPS analysis.
  • Manage the monthly corporate expense close process and cash processing.
  • Balance and reconcile general ledger accounts between multiple systems.
  • Build and maintain relationships of trust with senior leaders across the enterprise.
  • Partner with various business areas to support initiatives and new products.
  • Champion innovative capabilities and new technologies within Controllers.
  • Lead team through transformative system and process changes.
  • Provide exceptional leadership and coaching to build a strong financial accounting organization.

Requirements

  • Minimum 10+ years of accounting experience preferred; insurance industry experience required.
  • Bachelor's and/or Master's degree in Accounting required.
  • CPA strongly preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP and NAIC Statutory accounting required.
  • Deep understanding of stock compensation and pension accounting is a plus.
  • Strong leadership and team management skills.
  • Experience leading high-performing teams under pressure to meet tight deadlines.
  • Ability to lead initiatives in a matrix environment across Controllers and Finance organization.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and commitment to producing timely and accurate financial results.
  • Outstanding communication, interpersonal, and organizational influencing skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite required.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with Big 4 public accounting, particularly with insurance clients.
