About the position

The Assistant Vice President of Corporate Accounting Services at The Hartford is a senior leadership role responsible for overseeing various areas within the Accounting Services team. This position plays a crucial role in managing the financial accounting close and reporting processes, ensuring compliance with accounting policies, and acting as a trusted advisor to senior leaders across the organization. The AVP will lead initiatives to innovate and improve accounting processes while fostering a culture of diversity and inclusion within the team.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a key leader and primary support for the VP of Accounting Services.
  • Define, manage, and drive the financial accounting close and reporting process.
  • Ensure compliance with accounting policies and resolve any arising issues.
  • Oversee the monthly Accounting and Reporting Process, including benefits accounting and reporting.
  • Review and oversee results of the Corporate segment, including debt and equity reporting.
  • Build and maintain relationships with senior leaders and act as a strategic thought partner.
  • Partner with various business areas to support initiatives and new products.
  • Champion innovative capabilities and new technologies within the Controllers team.
  • Lead team through transformative system and process changes.
  • Provide exceptional leadership and coaching to build a strong financial accounting team.

Requirements

  • Minimum 10+ years of accounting experience, preferably in the insurance industry.
  • Bachelor's and/or Master's degree in Accounting required.
  • CPA strongly preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP and NAIC Statutory accounting required.
  • Experience in stock compensation and pension accounting is a plus.
  • Strong leadership and team management skills.
  • Ability to lead high-performing teams under pressure to meet deadlines.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and commitment to accurate financial results.
  • Outstanding communication, interpersonal, and organizational influencing skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with Big 4 public accounting, particularly with insurance clients.
  • Proficiency in PeopleSoft financial modules.
