About the position

The AVP General Accounting position at Navy Federal Credit Union is a pivotal role within the Comptroller department, reporting directly to the VP of Accounting Operations. This position is responsible for directing and managing various branches of General Accounting, Funds Accounting, and Financial Accounting. The AVP will ensure that internal controls and accounting operations policies and procedures are adhered to, guaranteeing that all accounting operations, transactions, and reporting are accurately classified, recorded, reconciled, and reported. The role requires a strategic mindset to plan, direct, and lead the operations of the branches, aligning them with organizational objectives and regulatory requirements. In this role, the AVP will implement branch strategies, goals, and operating procedures while monitoring and evaluating their effectiveness. They will identify performance gaps, establish metrics, and initiate improvements as necessary. The AVP will also manage the implementation and review of internal controls to ensure the integrity of financial transactions. Leadership is a key component of this position, as the AVP will provide guidance through teaching, training, and mentorship programs to foster employee engagement and succession planning. The AVP will oversee the accounting of cash at branches, ATMs, vaults, and deposits, while also developing new programs and automated solutions to enhance accounting methods and reporting. Collaboration with systems personnel is essential to maintain accurate documentation of general ledger processes. The AVP will ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and manage projects involving external vendors related to accounting operations. Additionally, the AVP will stay informed about developments from the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) and participate in financial audits, interacting with internal and external auditors as well as NCUA examiners.

Responsibilities

  • Direct and manage General Accounting branches of the Comptroller department under the leadership of the VP Accounting Operations.
  • Plan, direct, and lead strategic recommendations regarding the branch's operations and compliance with organizational objectives.
  • Implement branch strategies, goals, objectives, policies, and operating procedures; monitor and evaluate program effectiveness.
  • Determine and review gaps in branch performance, establish performance metrics, and ensure improvements are initiated and managed.
  • Manage the implementation and review of internal controls to ensure financial transactions are properly classified, recorded, reconciled, and reported.
  • Provide positive leadership through teaching, training, employee engagement, succession planning, and mentorship programs.
  • Oversee the accounting of cash at branches, ATMs, vaults, and deposits in transit.
  • Develop and recommend new programs, procedures, and automated solutions for improving accounting methods and report production.
  • Evaluate financial and technical impacts of new products and services, managing collaboration with project/change management teams.
  • Drive branch change and learning by embracing new, flexible, and agile approaches to improve business performance and efficiency.
  • Direct implementation of new procedures and automated processes related to financial and funds accounting, maintaining accurate accounting records.
  • Collaborate with systems personnel to ensure maintenance of complete and current documentation of general ledger processes and system interfaces.
  • Direct the maintenance of the general ledger system and ensure compliance with GAAP.
  • Manage projects and external vendors involved in accounting operations activities, including development of requirements and review of proposals.
  • Maintain awareness of FASB developments and recommend new/revised internal practices and systems.
  • Participate in financial and investor reporting audits, interacting with internal and external auditors, and NCUA examiners.

Requirements

  • Significant experience in financial accounting, financial management, and internal/external reporting for a financial organization.
  • Advanced knowledge of federal and state laws pertaining to financial asset management and reporting requirements, including SFAS, FASB, and GAAP.
  • Advanced knowledge of financial services, reconciliation, payments, Automated Clearing House, and Check Processing.
  • Experience in demonstrating thought-leadership, initiative taking, decision-making, and creativity in solving business problems.
  • Experience in implementing strategic initiatives to support organizational objectives.
  • Experience with automated systems including payment, remittance processing, and imaging systems.
  • Ability to negotiate, persuade, guide/direct team members, and work collaboratively across departments.
  • Significant experience in leading, directing, and controlling a multi-function corporate/institutional operation.
  • Effective skill in leading with diplomacy and tact while maintaining assertiveness and persistence.
  • Advanced analytical/quantitative, reconciliation, and deductive reasoning skills.
  • Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Finance, Accounting, Economics, or a related field, or equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.
