About the position

The position involves directing and managing the General Accounting branches of the Comptroller department under the leadership of the VP of Accounting Operations. The primary focus is to ensure that internal controls and accounting operations policies and procedures are adhered to, guaranteeing that accounting operations, transactions, and reporting are accurately classified, recorded, reconciled, and reported. The role requires a strategic approach to leadership, with responsibilities spanning various branches including General Accounting, Funds Accounting, and Financial Accounting. The successful candidate will be accountable for the leadership, direction, and management of these branches, ensuring compliance with organizational objectives and regulatory requirements. In this role, the individual will plan, direct, and lead strategic recommendations from senior management regarding the operations and direction of the branches. This includes implementing branch strategies, monitoring program effectiveness, and advising senior management on issues while implementing necessary improvements. The position also involves determining performance gaps, establishing performance metrics, and managing improvements to ensure optimal branch performance. The candidate will manage the implementation and review of internal controls to ensure financial transactions are properly classified and reported. Providing positive leadership through teaching, training, employee engagement, and mentorship programs is essential. The role also includes overseeing cash accounting at branches, ATMs, vaults, and deposits, as well as developing new programs and automated solutions to enhance accounting methods and reporting. Collaboration with systems personnel is crucial to ensure the maintenance of complete documentation of general ledger processes and compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). The candidate will also manage projects and external vendors involved in accounting operations, ensuring adherence to procurement policies. Staying updated on Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) developments and participating in financial audits are also key responsibilities. Overall, the position requires a proactive approach to leadership and a commitment to improving business performance and efficiency.

Responsibilities

  • Direct and manage the General Accounting branches of the Comptroller department under the VP Accounting Operations.
  • Plan, direct, and lead strategic recommendations regarding branch operations and compliance with organizational objectives.
  • Implement branch strategies, goals, objectives, policies, and operating procedures; monitor and evaluate program effectiveness.
  • Determine and review gaps in branch performance and establish performance metrics for improvement.
  • Manage the implementation and review of internal controls for financial transactions.
  • Provide leadership through teaching, training, employee engagement, and mentorship programs.
  • Oversee the accounting of cash at branches, ATMs, vaults, and deposits.
  • Develop and recommend new programs and automated solutions for accounting methods and report production.
  • Evaluate financial and technical impacts of new products and manage collaboration with project teams.
  • Drive branch change and learning by embracing new approaches to improve performance and efficiency.
  • Direct implementation of new procedures and automated processes related to financial accounting.
  • Collaborate with systems personnel to maintain documentation of general ledger processes.
  • Direct the maintenance of the general ledger system and ensure compliance with GAAP.
  • Manage projects and external vendors involved in accounting operations activities.
  • Maintain awareness of FASB developments and recommend new practices and systems.
  • Participate in financial and investor reporting audits and interact with auditors.

Requirements

  • Significant experience in financial accounting, financial management, and internal/external reporting for a financial organization.
  • Advanced knowledge of federal and state laws related to financial asset management and reporting requirements.
  • Advanced knowledge of financial services, reconciliation, payments, and Automated Clearing House processes.
  • Experience in demonstrating thought-leadership, initiative, decision-making, and creativity in solving business problems.
  • Experience in implementing strategic initiatives to support organizational objectives.
  • Experience with automated systems including payment and remittance processing.
  • Ability to negotiate, persuade, and guide team members in a collaborative environment.
  • Significant experience in leading and controlling multi-function corporate operations.
  • Effective skills in leading with diplomacy and tact while maintaining assertiveness.
  • Advanced analytical, reconciliation, and deductive reasoning skills.
  • Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Finance, Accounting, Economics, or a related field.
