About the position

The Portfolio Manager-HFF is a critical role within the Hotel Franchise Finance (HFF) team, reporting directly to the Underwriting Team Lead. This position is responsible for the comprehensive analysis, structuring, underwriting, and closing of complex loans specifically for hotels across the United States. The Portfolio Manager will collaborate closely with the Underwriting Team Lead and the Managing Director-Sales to ensure that credit risks are effectively monitored and identified, thereby supporting the attainment of both Bank and Business Line goals. This involves actively underwriting, closing, and managing desirable loans while ensuring compliance with all Bank policies and procedures, as well as adhering to applicable state and federal banking regulations. In this role, the Portfolio Manager will engage with sophisticated clients, including hotel owners, chief financial officers, general managers, and legal staff, to assess the best credit structure that meets both Bank requirements and customer needs. The incumbent will gather, analyze, and summarize complex underwriting information to present financing requests to senior management and credit approvers. Key responsibilities include analyzing property attributes, reviewing appraisals for accuracy, negotiating loan documents, and ensuring that loans conform to Bank lending policies. The Portfolio Manager will also coordinate the administration and closing of approved loans, ensuring that managed loans are assigned timely and accurate credit risk ratings. The position requires strong organizational and teamwork skills, as well as a commitment to superior customer service. The Portfolio Manager will handle various underwriting and portfolio management tasks related to new loan requests and the existing portfolio, reinforcing the importance of collaboration and effective communication within the team.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze, structure, underwrite, and close complex loans on hotels across the United States.
  • Work with the Underwriting Team Lead and Managing Director-Sales to monitor and identify credit risks.
  • Review loan opportunities and advise on credit metrics and proposed loan structures.
  • Interact with clients including hotel owners and CFOs to assess credit structures.
  • Gather, analyze, and summarize complex underwriting information for financing requests.
  • Ascertain key property attributes and challenges, including brand analysis and occupancy trends.
  • Analyze appraiser and borrower projections of key financial data and incorporate variance analysis.
  • Review appraisals for accuracy and identify valuation and underwriting risks.
  • Negotiate loan documents consistent with approved loan terms and financial covenants.
  • Coordinate the administration and closing of approved loans, ensuring compliance with Bank policies.
  • Obtain sufficient reporting data and documentation from customers and assist in problem-solving related to loans.
  • Identify and mitigate exceptions to Bank guidelines and ensure timely credit risk ratings.
  • Reinforce superior customer service through effective communication and follow-through.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Finance or Accounting from a 4-year college or university.
  • Minimum 5 years of Hotel or CRE-Income underwriting experience at a financial institution.
  • Exceptional credit knowledge and underwriting skills in Commercial Real Estate lending.
  • Advanced experience in financial statement and tax return analysis.
  • Strong portfolio management skills for timely identification of credit concerns.
  • Outstanding presentation, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Excellent multitasking abilities to handle multiple credit requests.
  • Self-starter with an entrepreneurial attitude and positive outlook.
  • Ability to travel on short notice and potentially on weekends.
