About the position

The Associate Vice President of Strategic Planning at Nationwide will play a crucial role in advising and guiding executive leadership through strategic decision-making processes. This position focuses on identifying and pursuing strategic opportunities, managing projects for the Office of the CEO, and collaborating with various business units to drive impactful results. The role is designed for individuals who are big-picture thinkers and possess strong management consulting skills, allowing them to engage directly with senior leaders without the need for extensive travel.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with business leaders to identify, evaluate, and pursue strategic opportunities.
  • Manage strategic projects for the Office of the CEO, Management Committee, or business leadership teams.
  • Determine strategic positioning and necessary trade-offs for each strategy.
  • Organize and lead project teams from across Nationwide's corporate and business unit functions.
  • Advise on the corporate or business level strategic planning process, producing a three-year strategic plan.
  • Translate strategic plans into operational plans for business units.
  • Monitor the impact and efficacy of defined strategies using financial and statistical data.
  • Communicate evaluation findings and recommendations to management, including the Board of Directors.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with industry experts to facilitate innovation and strategic thinking.
  • Engage in continuous improvement of the department and develop associates' skills.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated academic success, preferably with an MBA or equivalent.
  • Significant leadership experience with strategic projects from a top-tier consulting firm or Fortune 100 strategic planning group.
  • Proven ability to maximize business and industry knowledge.
  • Solid understanding of the insurance industry is a plus.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, including structuring problems and leading discussions.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, in individual and group settings.
  • Ability to provide impactful advice and build effective partnerships with business partners.
  • Experience with project management tools and methodologies.

Nice-to-haves

  • Background in P&C Personal Lines or Commercial Lines is highly desirable.
