About the position

The Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) is seeking a Senior AWS Cloud SysOps/DevOps Engineer to support cloud infrastructure automation initiatives for NASA's flagship Space Telescope missions. This role involves leveraging DevOps practices and CI/CD pipelines to implement robust automation and monitoring systems for AWS cloud applications, contributing to significant scientific discoveries through the Hubble, James Webb, and Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescopes. The engineer will collaborate with cross-functional teams to design, deploy, and maintain secure cloud architectures, automate security processes, and ensure compliance with industry regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement solutions for Identity & Access Management (IAM) to improve automation, efficiency, and scalability.
  • Build and review IAM assets, including policies for application and DevOps teams, enhancing capabilities within the existing IAM framework.
  • Analyze, tune, and plan capacity for STScI's systems in AWS, recommending technology improvements and cost optimizations.
  • Perform complex analysis to acquire, install, modify, and support operating systems, software, databases, and security standards.
  • Lead the administration and systems management with automation, including Amazon Machine Images (AMIs) and containers.
  • Proactively monitor the health and utilization of AWS resources and develop automated event-based response systems.
  • Build, deploy, and support automation for cloud instances and container frameworks, ensuring a secure environment.
  • Manage Infrastructure as Code (IaC) for AWS cloud infrastructure.
  • Work directly with AWS support engineers to identify and resolve issues.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent.
  • Minimum 8 years of extensive experience in IT, DevOps, or application development with hands-on AWS cloud infrastructure management experience.
  • Significant hands-on experience with AWS cloud services, including infrastructure, security, networking, and databases.
  • Experience with Identity Provider solutions like Active Directory, Okta, or PingIdentity and SSO.
  • Strong knowledge of Linux and AWS services such as Compute, RDS, VPC, and S3.
  • Required scripting skills (shell scripts; Python preferred) and familiarity with CloudFormation, Terraform, JSON, and YAML.
  • Proficient knowledge of containerization and container orchestration.
  • Experience with CI/CD tools like Git, Jenkins, and AWS developer tools.
