About the position

AbbVie is seeking an AWS Data Architect to join the US Commercial Business Technology Solutions team. This role is pivotal in the planning, coordination, and successful deployment of the US Commercial Data Lake project, which aims to enhance capabilities across AbbVie’s various brands and functions. The AWS Data Architect will work closely with IT Business Relationship Managers, Business Consultants, Solution Architects, Technical Leads, Developers, Business Analysts, PMO, business stakeholders, and System Integrators to ensure the end-to-end delivery and completion of commercial solutions. The architect will oversee the alignment of key project activities and milestones, ensuring that all business and project cut-over activities are completed effectively. The successful candidate will be responsible for the technical design of modernization efforts across a suite of system architecture, focusing on optimizing system and infrastructure costs while improving DevOps processes and practices. This role requires expertise in current data management principles and architecture, as well as experience in large system data designs and data modeling techniques. The AWS Data Architect will also be tasked with building external cloud data applications and capabilities, particularly within the AWS ecosystem, and will be expected to evaluate, prototype, and recommend both open-source and vendor technologies and platforms. In addition to technical responsibilities, the AWS Data Architect will advocate for and define the cloud architecture vision from a strategic perspective, ensuring adherence to processes such as design walkthroughs, change management, and the software development lifecycle (SDLC). Responsibilities

  • Plan, coordinate, and oversee the successful deployment of the US Commercial Data Lake project.
  • Collaborate with IT Business Relationship Managers, Business Consultants, Solution Architects, Technical Leads, Developers, Business Analysts, PMO, and business stakeholders to drive solutions.
  • Ensure alignment of key project activities and milestones for deployment and solution delivery with Data and System Integrators.
  • Oversee and ensure completion of business and project cut-over activities.
  • Design modernization efforts for system architecture, focusing on cost optimization and improved DevOps processes.
  • Provide expertise in data management principles and architecture, including large system data designs and data modeling techniques.
  • Build external cloud data applications and capabilities, particularly in AWS.
  • Evaluate, prototype, and recommend open-source and vendor technologies and platforms.
  • Establish and maintain architectural models with a focus on microservices in a cloud environment.
  • Drive scope definition, requirements analysis, functional and technical design, application build, product configuration, unit testing, and production deployment for cloud platform projects.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree with 8 years of experience, or a Master's degree with 7 years of experience, or a PhD with 3 years of experience in designing and architecting complex solutions in a highly regulated environment.
  • Experience defining technology standards for an organization.
  • Familiarity with architecture frameworks, including design patterns and distributed applications, particularly the AWS Well-Architected Framework.
  • Experience with Big Data platforms like Cloudera (CDH/CDP) and AWS EMR.
  • Proficiency in AWS services such as EC2, S3, RDS, EKS, Lambda, API Gateway, Route 53, VPC, IAM, etc.
  • Experience with programming technologies including Java, Python, Kafka, and Spark.
  • Knowledge of data technologies including SQL, NoSQL, Big Data, R, and GraphQL.
  • Ability to build cloud-native data platforms and capabilities that enable data analytics, reporting, model development, and machine learning.
  • Experience managing and enhancing cloud-native data lakes and Data Warehouse platforms.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with DevOps/Platform technologies such as AWS, Cloud Formation, Terraform, Kubernetes, Linux/Bash, Docker, and CI/CD.
  • Ability to create Proof of Concepts (POCs) to illustrate the incorporation of cutting-edge technologies into existing systems.
