About the position
The B Class Pipe Welder at Austal USA, LLC is responsible for performing welding tasks on marine vessels while ensuring adherence to quality standards and production goals. This role requires collaboration with a team of Pipe Fitters and Welders, focusing on maintaining a positive work environment and achieving maximum productivity. The position demands a strong mechanical aptitude, the ability to interpret job specifications, and a commitment to continuous improvement and teamwork.
Responsibilities
- Read and interpret basic drawings and weld symbols.
- Pass Austal USA TIG weld test procedures in 6G position.
- Pass Austal USA TIG weld test procedure for aluminum pipe.
- Work to Austal TIG Welding standards.
- Follow Austal housekeeping procedures.
- Inspect work, identify potential problems, and initiate corrective actions.
- Increase awareness of quality procedures within the department.
- Perform as a productive working team member that meets daily goals set by the supervisor.
- Continuously improve communications and flexibility within the team.
- Help build the team environment and pride of workmanship.
- Contribute towards innovation and productivity improvements.
- Assist in the control of waste elimination, e.g., materials and consumables.
- Assist supervisor in maintaining control of department equipment and its maintenance.
- Ensure work area is left clean and all equipment and tools are stowed away safely.
Requirements
- 1 year minimum work experience at Austal or 2 years experience in a similar role at a comparable employer.
- Completion of an Austal approved Advanced Pipe Welder or comparable technical education is acceptable in lieu of experience.
- Pass the 'B' Class pipe welder tests with 6G certifications for copper nickel and stainless steel.
- Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
- Ability to write simple correspondence.
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, divide, and measure using the metric system.
