About the position

The Backbone Architect is responsible for the network design of Flexential's backbone that supports various services including colocation, cloud, and managed services. This role involves making architectural decisions based on requirements from product, operations, and business needs, and requires extensive knowledge in service provider network design and routing protocols.

Responsibilities

  • Designs and implements solutions for the Flexential colo, cloud, and managed services network infrastructure with high availability and optimal performance.
  • Evaluates multiple vendors with documented engineering specifications/requirements and test plans in conjunction with overall business strategies.
  • Troubleshoots and supports complex routing and switching issues and problems.
  • Integrates both internal and external solutions into the architecture.
  • Manages related projects and their delivery.
  • Establishes and documents standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Provides technical support and training to Operations, Product, and Client Services on all related technologies.
  • Performs other job-related duties as required.

Requirements

  • In-depth understanding of networking protocols such as OSPF, BGP, MPLS, Segment Routing, spanning-tree, EVPN, and FHRP.
  • Fundamental understanding of project management principles to effectively lead projects.
  • Strong communication skills (oral and written) to align multi-functional teams and objectives and promote team outcomes.
  • Ability to balance requirements from the business and operations with insight to industry trends to facilitate solutions that deliver ongoing capabilities.
  • Excellent analytical, problem solving, organizational, and time management skills.
  • Desire to grow and learn new technologies.
  • Knowledge of change management practices.
  • Extensive experience with IPv4 and IPv6 addressing.
  • Extensive experience working with Cisco IOS-XR.
  • Strong commitment to customer service.
  • Self-motivation and ability to work with minimum supervision.
  • Good decision-making abilities.

Nice-to-haves

  • Some programming language and fundamental knowledge (Python, Perl, etc.).
  • BA/BS education.
  • Service provider experience.
  • Professional level network certifications (CCIE, JNCIE).
