About the position

This is a Medical Laboratory Supervisor I position that will provide on-site laboratory staffing supervision, planning, and coordination for all testing services performed by the NCSLPH Microbiology Unit's Bacteriology Core and Parasitology laboratory sections. This position will oversee classical microbiological techniques, molecular techniques (e.g. real-time PCR), and MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry to identify Gram-positive cocci, Gram-negative rods, Bacillus species, Corynebacterium species, Vibrio species, and other difficult to identify bacteria. This position will oversee antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) for select bacterial pathogens (e.g. Neisseria gonorrhoeae, VISA/ VRSA) and traditional parasitology methods to aid in the diagnosis of gastrointestinal parasites (e.g. Giardia duodenales, Cryptosporidium spp.). This position will maintain the section's quality assurance program, oversee daily specimen testing and reporting, manage standard operating procedures (SOPs), and participate in new assay development for emerging identification and AST methods and techniques. This position will maintain area-specific inventory, procure reagents and consumables required to maintain testing capacity, and manage operational budgets. This position will schedule bench assignments, manage staff leave, conduct performance evaluations, participate in new staff recruiting and hiring, and perform technical training as required.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct laboratory supervision of the NCSLPH Microbiology Unit's general microbiology, parasitology and AST laboratories
  • Provide daily supervision to testing personnel, manage staff training, manage proficiency testing programs, and perform competency assessments per CLIA regulatory guidelines
  • Provide regulatory oversight of Quality Management Systems (QMS) and assist in managing the validation and onboarding of new microbiological and molecular techniques
  • Maintain responsibility for patient reports and AST results
  • Provide laboratory testing consultation and AST alert values to North Carolina Communicable Disease Branch (NC CDB), physicians, epidemiologists, nurses, and CDC
  • Manage section's standard operating procedures
  • Monitor and document section's quality indicators
  • Manage LIMS (Laboratory Information System) and document compliance software for patient information, quality control, results, and document management
  • Manage and procure section's testing reagents, equipment, and consumables
  • Coordinate with local and federal partners for outbreak investigations and laboratory response

Requirements

  • Must meet Federal CLIA '88 personnel requirements for General Supervisor in a high complexity laboratory.
  • Experience with clinical microbiology procedures using classical microbiological and molecular techniques for the identification and characterization of infectious pathogens
  • Experience troubleshooting, interpreting, and communicating laboratory results
  • Experience reviewing and reporting Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing (AST) using CLSI guidelines within a CAP or CLIA regulated high complexity laboratory
  • Experience managing new method verifications and validations
  • Experience with CLIA and/or CAP regulations and undergoing audits and inspections

Nice-to-haves
