About the position

The Bakery Assistant Department Manager at Hy-Vee plays a crucial role in supporting the Bakery Department Manager to deliver high-quality products and exceptional customer service. This position involves overseeing daily operations, ensuring product freshness, and maintaining a positive company image through friendly interactions with customers and team members.

Responsibilities

• Provide prompt, efficient, and friendly customer service by exhibiting caring, concern, and patience in all customer interactions.
• Greet customers in a friendly manner and make an effort to learn their names.
• Assist customers by escorting them to products, loading/unloading heavy items, and addressing customer suggestions or requests.
• Answer the telephone promptly and provide helpful service to customers, including taking product orders.
• Check orders for the day and set up a timeline and production schedule.
• Review the status and appearance of products for freshness and pull stale items.
• Assign tasks to bakers and review daily production lists with department employees.
• Organize and assist in production as needed, creating additional production schedules when necessary.
• Ensure department standards are met and review product status for closing lists.
• Train new employees and handle customer issues effectively.
• Maintain cleanliness and proper sanitation procedures in the work area.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent experience.
• 1 to 3 years of similar or related experience in a bakery or food service environment.
• Ability to solve practical problems and interpret instructions.
• Basic arithmetic skills involving fractions, decimals, and percentages.
• Ability to file, post, and mail materials, and guide people.

• Experience in a supervisory role within a bakery or food service environment.
• Knowledge of bakery production processes and equipment.
