About the position

The Middle School Assistant Coach for Girls Basketball is responsible for overseeing the growth and development of student athletes, focusing on fundamental skills instruction and promoting academic and athletic excellence. The role emphasizes leadership skills, positive social relationships, and the overall well-being of the athletes. The assistant coach is expected to maintain knowledge of sport-specific techniques, rules, and regulations, while also promoting the program within the school and ensuring a safe and supportive environment for all participants.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the growth and development of student athletes.
  • Focus on fundamental skills instruction and whole child development.
  • Stay current with sport-specific literature and attend clinics and workshops.
  • Study and understand the rules and regulations of the sport and relevant organizations.
  • Promote the sport within the school and encourage student participation.
  • Hold daily practices and manage attendance.
  • Model safety training and have knowledge of basic athletic training skills.
  • Exhibit professionalism and good judgment in coaching behaviors.
  • Teach and develop basic skills, leadership characteristics, and teamwork.
  • Serve as an example of sportsmanship and ethical behavior.
  • Ensure participants complete the eligibility process before practice.
  • Report injuries and fill out accident reports promptly.
  • Attend building, district, and league meetings as required.
  • Report safety concerns regarding facilities and equipment.
  • Participate in the coach evaluation process at the end of the season.
  • Meet with the head coach to develop program goals and consistent instruction plans.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • One year of sport-specific playing and/or coaching experience in a secondary and/or post-secondary athletics program or related club coaching experience.
  • Proven training and experience in presenting drills and safety factors.

Nice-to-haves

  • Three or more years of paid middle school and/or post-secondary sport-specific coaching experience or related club coaching experience.
  • Completion of the National Federation Coaching Fundamentals Course.
