About the position

The Before and After School Program Assistant Teacher position at the YMCA of Greater Grand Rapids is designed for individuals who are passionate about working with children and contributing to their development in a safe and engaging environment. This role is crucial in providing a reliable, fun, and educational atmosphere for children before they start their school day and after they finish. The Assistant Teacher will work closely with the Site Coordinator to plan, develop, and implement daily lesson plans and activities that cater to the needs of school-age children. The position requires weekday availability, specifically from 6:00 AM to 9:00 AM and/or 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM, with the possibility of working both shifts in a single day, which comes with a $2/hour shift premium. The YMCA emphasizes a culture of inclusivity and community engagement, where all staff members are encouraged to foster relationships with members and promote a sense of belonging. The Assistant Teacher will play a vital role in maintaining records of attendance, preparing materials for activities, and ensuring that each child is supervised and engaged throughout their time in the program. Responsibilities

  • Assist Site Coordinator in developing and leading daily lesson plans
  • Prepare materials for daily activities
  • Maintain records of attendance, arrival, and departure times
  • Provide weekly lesson plans to parents
  • Communicate daily activities to each participant's parent
  • Supervise children during program hours
  • Assist Site Supervisor with parent-teacher conferences as needed
  • Maintain quality and quantity of supplies, equipment, and materials in the classroom
  • Perform any other functions necessary for the smooth operation of the YMCA

Requirements

  • Six months to one year of youth development related experience or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
  • Ability to interact with people of all ethnic backgrounds, ages, and lifestyles
  • Ability and desire to work with school-age children
  • Blood Borne Pathogen training
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certification required within the first 60 days
  • First Aid Certification required within the first 60 days
  • AED-Oxygen Certification required within the first 60 days
  • State of Michigan criminal background clearance (ICHAT)
