About the position

The Behavioral Addictions Specialist at The Menninger Clinic is responsible for providing comprehensive assessment, education, and counseling services to patients dealing with behavioral addictions and co-occurring disorders. This role involves collaborating with a treatment team to develop individualized treatment plans, conducting psychosocial assessments, and facilitating both individual and group counseling sessions. The specialist will also engage in professional development and provide training to staff and trainees.

Responsibilities

  • Gather psychosocial information regarding behavioral addictions and co-occurring disorders from patients and submit written assessments to the treatment team.
  • Collaborate with the treatment team to establish diagnoses and formulate individualized treatment plans.
  • Demonstrate competence in assessing and treating behavioral addictions and co-occurring disorders.
  • Document assessments and consultations according to Menninger standards for content and timeliness.
  • Provide and receive pertinent information during interdisciplinary team meetings.
  • Identify ongoing treatment needs and establish measurable goals for each patient in collaboration with the treatment team.
  • Provide education to patients and families regarding the bio-psycho-social influences of substance use and addictive disorders.
  • Assure attendance at mutual support meetings such as AA, NA, and SMART Recovery.
  • Develop recovery management plans in collaboration with clients and families.
  • Conduct weekly individual counseling sessions for identified patients.
  • Provide training and consultation on behavioral addictions to staff and families.
  • Serve as a resource for staff training related to behavioral addictions.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development and self-care activities.
  • Participate in clinic-based research projects and give presentations to professional and community audiences.
  • Assist patients and families in locating treatment resources and ensure appropriate discharge planning.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in Social Work, Counseling, or Psychology.
  • Credentialed in Behavioral Addictions (Gambling, Problematic Sexual Behavior, and/or Gaming disorders).
  • Three years of experience in mental health and addictions, including experience with standardized addiction assessment tools.

Nice-to-haves

  • LCSW or LPC and LCDC in the State of Texas.
  • LPC-A or LMSW must be eligible to obtain full licensure within 90 days of hire.
