About the position

The Behavioral Health Specialist position at Banner Thunderbird Medical Center involves providing direct care to psychiatric patients under the supervision of a registered nurse. This role focuses on ensuring patient safety, assisting with daily living activities, and participating in the implementation of treatment plans for individuals with various mental health diagnoses. The position is part-time, specifically for night shifts, and requires working weekends and holidays on a rotating basis.

Responsibilities

  • Provides basic nursing care to patients including technical monitoring, taking vital signs, and physical care.
  • Orients patients to treatment settings and assists with activities of daily living as needed.
  • Reviews and participates in the implementation of the patient treatment plan.
  • Makes rounds and monitors patients' activities, physical and mental status, and reports to nursing staff.
  • Conducts patient safety monitoring activities such as observational checks and checks patient belongings for contraband.
  • Documents observations, interventions, and group activities in the patient medical record while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Maintains a safe, orderly, and therapeutic environment for patients.
  • Recognizes patients in crisis or medical emergency situations and provides appropriate interventions.
  • Assesses and interacts therapeutically with patients and families, promoting dignity and independence.
  • Plans and facilitates social and didactic group activities.
  • Maintains knowledge of behavioral disorders and medications relevant to position responsibilities.
  • Assists in the admission, discharge, and transfer process of patients.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in a behavioral health related field OR High School diploma with 1 year of direct patient care in an inpatient behavioral health setting.
  • Experience in an inpatient psychiatric facility, assisting with personal grooming and daily living activities.
  • Ability to conduct educational, recreational, and skills groups appropriate to the patient population.
  • Experience in maintaining a therapeutic milieu and applying non-violent de-escalation interventions in crisis situations.
  • Knowledge of common symptoms of mental illness and their relation to treatment interventions.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required.
  • Possession of an Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card at the time of hire.
