About the position

The Behavioral Health Specialist provides direct clinical services to patients, families, and significant others in the Emergency Department. This role involves making clinical assessments, recommending appropriate services, and collaborating with healthcare professionals to facilitate care. The specialist also offers short-term clinical treatment services and support for individuals facing mental health crises or trauma.

Responsibilities

• Provides direct clinical services to patients, families, and others, including mental health and chemical dependency evaluations, crisis intervention, and supportive counseling.
• Offers supportive intervention for situational distress, illnesses, and trauma, including support for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault.
• Educates patients and families regarding medical and mental health issues relevant to the setting.
• Assists the Emergency Department staff with the assessment of complex patients using clinical techniques such as crisis intervention.
• Prepares documentation for all services provided, including maintaining contact records and clinical evaluations.
• Facilitates patient entry into Behavioral Services by providing evaluations and making level of care recommendations.
• Obtains informed consents and other legally required documents for admissions.
• Collaborates with Patient Financial Services to ensure insurance verification and benefits determination.

Requirements

• Master's degree in social work, psychology, psychiatric nursing, or counseling.
• Licensing appropriate to the profession.
• Clinical and analytical skills necessary to assess an individual's needs for behavioral health services.
• Knowledge of psychiatric diagnostic methodology and criteria.
• Demonstrated competence with verbal and written communication skills.
