About the position

The Behavioral Health Specialist at the Cook County Sheriff's Office plays a crucial role in providing mental health support and counseling to individuals in custody. This position involves working collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team to assess the needs of individuals, develop treatment plans, and facilitate their transition back into the community post-release. The specialist will conduct individual and group counseling, manage cases, and coordinate care with community resources, all while adhering to the department's mission and philosophy.

Responsibilities

  • Assess individuals in custody for clinical, socio-emotional, and reentry service needs.
  • Provide focused intervention and consultation to enhance staff skills in managing individuals in custody.
  • Develop relapse prevention plans and assist individuals in maintaining stability.
  • Establish supportive therapeutic relationships and lead structured therapeutic programs.
  • Guide individuals in developing skills for problem-solving and conflict resolution.
  • Gather information about participants' needs and collaborate with service organizations.
  • Complete and maintain treatment-related paperwork in compliance with regulations.
  • Refer individuals to community resources and facilitate coordinated releases.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of treatment plans based on individual progress.
  • Stay informed on new developments in counseling through professional literature and workshops.

Requirements

  • Possession of a bachelor's or higher degree in Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, or a related field.
  • Two or more years of full-time professional work experience in the mental health field.
  • One or more years of experience conducting mental health assessments on adult populations.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Ability to work directly with individuals in custody and within the Cook County Department of Corrections.

Nice-to-haves

  • Possession of a master's degree in Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, or a related field.
  • Active state licensure as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) or Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC).
  • Certification as a Certified Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Counselor (CADC).
  • Three or more years of experience in a community mental health or hospital setting.
  • Bilingual language skills.
