About the position

The Behavioral Health Tech - Geriatric Psychiatric position is a PRN role focused on providing support to the patient care team under the supervision of the Charge RN and Program Manager. The role involves utilizing behavioral interventions and medical skills to assist in the treatment and monitoring of geriatric psychiatric patients, ensuring their safety and well-being in a therapeutic environment.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in identifying patients' problems, needs, and strengths.
  • Assists in providing treatment plans based on observations of patients' behavior and provides input into discharge planning.
  • Participates in implementing patients' treatment plans by monitoring progress and communicating behavior information to the team.
  • Detects and identifies unsafe environmental conditions and patient behaviors.
  • Facilitates patients in therapeutic activities.
  • Monitors patients in clinical and medical therapies.
  • Promotes a safe patient milieu and continuously monitors the therapeutic environment for safety concerns.
  • Assists patients in daily living activities, including hygiene needs.
  • Accompanies and transports patients as needed.
  • Takes and records vital signs such as blood pressure, temperature, pulse, and weight.
  • Performs blood glucose monitoring and collects specimens as directed.
  • Completes annual NCI and behavioral health specific training modules.
  • Takes emergency actions as required and reports significant changes in patients' conditions to the RN.
  • Assists with admission, discharge, and transfer processes.
  • Transports patients to and from various treatment areas within the hospital and assists in moving patients in and out of stretchers and wheelchairs.
  • Maintains cleanliness and orderliness of patients' rooms and restocks supplies as directed.
  • Provides care and constant visual monitoring for patients assigned as safety attendants (1:1 assignment).
  • Implements measures under NCI to restore and maintain a safe environment.
  • Intervenes during episodes of aggressive behavior to prevent harm.

Requirements

  • Six months of experience in a healthcare setting or completion of a related vocational health education course of at least 3 months.
  • Completion of the first semester of courses in an Associate or Bachelor's Degree program in Psychology, nursing, or a related field is acceptable.
  • Current Basic Life Support certification issued by the American Heart Association required upon hire.
  • Nonviolent Crisis Intervention training required within 3 months of hire.
  • Ability to work effectively in stressful situations and respond appropriately to emergencies.
  • Basic knowledge of computer systems and good interpersonal skills.
