About the position

The Benefits and Public Assistance Coordinator at the Anchorage Senior Activity Center plays a crucial role in the National Council of Aging (NCOA) Benefit Enrollment Center (BEC). This position is dedicated to assisting low-income Medicare beneficiaries in accessing essential public benefits, which include medical care, prescription drugs, healthy food, and home heating assistance. The coordinator will work approximately 25 to 30 hours per week, focusing on outreach and enrollment efforts to ensure that eligible seniors receive the support they need. In this role, the coordinator will be responsible for recruiting and training volunteers who will assist in the BEC. Collaboration is key, as the coordinator will work directly with the Benefits Enrollment Facilitator to oversee departmental operations. Building partnerships with other agencies and nonprofits is essential to provide comprehensive health and wellness programs tailored for elder Alaskans. The coordinator will also engage with the community through presentations, sharing vital information about available benefits for seniors. Additionally, the coordinator will collaborate with the Communications team to enhance publicity efforts through newsletters, media, and Public Service Announcements. The role may also include other duties as assigned, requiring flexibility and adaptability in a dynamic work environment.

Responsibilities

  • Assist low-income Medicare beneficiaries in enrolling in public benefits.

Requirements

  • Great interpersonal skills to discuss confidential and sensitive information.
  • Demonstrate maturity, dependability, judgment, and empathy.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills for reporting and public presentations.
  • Ability to understand the health problems and cultural attitudes of older adults.
  • Experience in gerontology preferred.
  • Neat personal appearance and punctuality are required.
  • First Aid and CPR certification (may complete paid training after hired).
  • Valid Alaska driver's license.
