About the position

The Benefits Center Coordinator (BCC) role at Unum is responsible for managing a block of claims related to payment, settlement, and triaging based on specialty areas. This position requires a strong understanding of claims management practices, effective customer service, and the ability to identify and prevent fraud. BCCs will engage in file reviews, claimant contact, and the analysis of medical and financial information to ensure appropriate benefit payments. The role emphasizes productivity, documentation skills, and collaboration with various resources to achieve optimal claims outcomes.

Responsibilities

  • Manage a block of claims for payment, settlement, and triaging based on specialty areas.
  • Conduct file reviews and maintain ongoing contact with claimants to assess claims status.
  • Review medical and financial information to confirm ongoing liability and appropriate benefit payments.
  • Provide effective and efficient claim management practices while demonstrating strong customer service.
  • Identify and prevent fraud by understanding processes related to SIU and Field/Vendor services.
  • Develop skills to meet departmental standards for production, quality, timeliness, and customer service.
  • Utilize specialty resources such as medical, vocational, and legal to achieve optimum claims outcomes.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation for each assigned claim.
  • Communicate technical information regarding financial matters and claim practices to claimants and other external customers.
  • Render claim-related decisions in accordance with policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Mathematical aptitude and detail-oriented with the ability to analyze and research contract information.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, along with strong interpersonal skills.
  • Experience working with internal and external customers.
  • Demonstrated critical thinking abilities and analytical skills.
  • Ability to manage conflict professionally and negotiate effectively.
  • Excellent customer service orientation and commitment to teamwork.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to balance production and independent decision-making.
  • Demonstrated success in meeting goals in demanding work environments.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in claims management or insurance industry.
