About the position

The Benefits Counselor position involves performing advanced advocacy and social services work for clients eligible for the Area Agency on Aging (AAA) services. The role requires serving as a liaison to help clients access public and private benefits, providing operational support in planning and evaluating legal services, and ensuring compliance with relevant regulations. Responsibilities include data analysis, report preparation, client counseling, and conducting outreach activities to educate the community about available benefits.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a liaison between clients and public/private benefits.
  • Compile, analyze, and submit fiscal and programmatic reports related to Benefits Counseling.
  • Organize and maintain accurate documentation of client data/contacts.
  • Provide advice and counseling to clients regarding public entitlements and legal issues.
  • Assist clients in preparing documentation for health care and consumer needs.
  • Advocate for clients in administrative decisions and legal matters.
  • Design and develop special projects related to Benefits Counseling.
  • Conduct seminars and outreach activities regarding eligibility and services.
  • Prepare quarterly newsletters on relevant programs and issues.
  • Assist in preparing grant plans and compliance with regulations.
  • Perform data entry and verification for assistance clients.
  • Conduct education and outreach activities for older individuals.
  • Attend required training and meetings related to program goals.
  • Maintain computerized client tracking systems.
  • Coordinate with AAA staff to advocate for elderly populations.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality of client information.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in public administration, gerontology, psychology, sociology, social work, or a related field plus one year of relevant experience; or an Associate degree plus at least two years of experience; or equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • Certification as a Benefits Counselor I and II and re-certification as required.
  • Appropriate Texas driver's license or alternate means of transportation.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in social services or advocacy work.
  • Knowledge of local, state, and federal laws related to aging services.
  • Proficiency in both oral and written communication.
