About the position

The Benefits Specialist at the University of Maine System is responsible for coordinating and administering employee and retiree benefits, ensuring compliance with relevant policies, federal and state regulations, and union contracts. This role requires a strong understanding of various benefit plans and the ability to handle sensitive information while providing excellent service to employees. Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and administer employee and retiree benefits activities.
  • Ensure compliance with UMS policies and federal/state regulations regarding leave programs.
  • Make informed decisions considering compliance impacts and implications.
  • Assess and balance compliance needs while adjusting priorities as necessary.
  • Maintain confidentiality while working with sensitive data and information.
  • Resolve complex data and record-keeping issues related to benefits.
  • Respond to inquiries with sound judgment and escalate when necessary.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in education and experience.
  • Working knowledge of retirement plans and health/wellness benefits.
  • Understanding of federal and state regulations affecting leave programs.
  • Ability to make proactive decisions regarding compliance.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills for effective communication.

Nice-to-haves

  • Five years' experience in employee benefits administration.
  • Experience in higher education with multiple unions.
  • Experience handling sensitive financial, health, and disability issues.
