About the position

The BEST Program Coordinator plays a crucial role in coordinating, organizing, leading, and supporting the BEST (Being Empowered and Safe Together) reintegration program and its associated activities. This position is integral to the Community Services department, working closely with the Maui Community Correctional Center to fulfill the agency's mission of strengthening the community and assisting individuals in need to restore their hope, reach their potential, and enrich their lives. The coordinator is responsible for ensuring that the program's objectives and outcomes are met in a timely manner while adhering to funding limitations. This includes updating, evaluating, and supporting program goals and objectives, as well as conducting outreach within the prison to identify and enroll eligible clients. In addition to program management, the BEST Program Coordinator serves as a community liaison for clients, overseeing case management support services, including the development of Individual Service Plans (ISP) for currently and previously incarcerated individuals. The coordinator assesses information collected during intake and determines eligibility for the program, as well as the need for referrals and additional services. They assist clients in navigating the application process for various services, including transportation, housing, medical, and employment support. The coordinator also plays a vital role in recruiting potential employers to host clients and maintains regular contact with clients to ensure accurate case records are kept. The position involves performing administrative duties to support the program, compiling records and data, and preparing reports as needed. The coordinator attends various meetings and operates a company vehicle for business purposes, all while maintaining a high level of customer service to meet clients' needs. Adherence to the organization's Standards of Conduct and safety policies is essential, along with regular, on-time attendance. The role also includes supervisory responsibilities, directly overseeing the BEST Case Manager Specialists, training employees, and participating in the hiring process alongside the Community Services Director.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates, organizes, leads, and supports the BEST reintegration program and activities.
  • Ensures BEST program objectives and outcomes are achieved in a timely manner and within funding limitations.
  • Updates, evaluates, and supports program goals, objectives, and outcomes.
  • Conducts outreach within the prison to identify and enroll eligible clients.
  • Serves as a community liaison for the BEST program and clients.
  • Oversees and performs case management support services, including Individual Service Plans (ISP) for currently and previously incarcerated individuals.
  • Assesses information collected in intake/assessment and determines program eligibility and the need for referrals, services, and assistance.
  • Assists clients in obtaining services by aiding in the completion of application forms and following through on the application and referral process.
  • Coordinates client support services such as transportation, rental, medical, educational, employment, housing, childcare, counseling, income maintenance, and food.
  • Recruits potential employers to act as host employers by phone or in-person.
  • Makes regular contact with clients and ensures all case records are accurately maintained.
  • Performs and oversees administrative duties to support the program.
  • Compiles records and data and prepares reports as assigned.
  • Attends various meetings as assigned.
  • Operates a company vehicle for company business.
  • Maintains a high level of customer service ensuring that client's needs are met.
  • Ensures all program activities and employees adhere to MEO's Standards of Conduct, Professional Standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Understands, follows, and supports all safety policies and programs.
  • Regular, on-time attendance.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field and case management experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Working knowledge of case management and ISP development and implementation.
  • Working knowledge of the causes and effects of incarceration and the ability to work successfully with incarcerated and/or paroled individuals.
  • Working knowledge of private nonprofit social services and available community resources.
  • Working knowledge of community history, traditions, and beliefs.
  • Understanding and knowledge of the Hawaii Correctional system.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including written, verbal, and listening abilities.
  • Ability to establish working relationships with appropriate community agencies.
  • Ability to create and maintain professional boundaries.
  • Cooperative team player with a desire to help others.
  • Knowledge and application of proper telephone etiquette.
  • Organized, detail-oriented, and task-oriented.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, meet deadlines, and prioritize workload.
  • Working knowledge of basic computer applications including desktop applications and data entry.
  • Basic typing skills and the ability to use standard office machines.
  • Must provide and maintain a clean traffic abstract and a valid driver's license.
  • Ability to pass a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical and comply with the provisions of MEO's Substance Abuse Policy.
  • Ability to work varied shifts, which may occasionally include nights and weekends.
  • Ability to travel off-island on occasion.
