About the position
The BIC Ranch Operations Specialist at Colorado State University is responsible for supporting the operations of the John E. Rouse Beef Improvement Center, which focuses on beef cattle research and management. This role involves hands-on work in ranch operations, including livestock care, equipment maintenance, and irrigation management, contributing to the overall mission of improving livestock production and animal welfare.
Responsibilities
- Ensure compliance with and proper accounting of operational and research funds, including tracking transactions and submitting invoices.
- Prepare hay ground and ditches for irrigation, applying fertilizer and monitoring water flow.
- Assist in livestock operations, including the operation of hay harvesting equipment and cattle processing using low-stress handling techniques.
- Maintain and repair ranch facilities, equipment, and fencing, ensuring operational efficiency.
- Feed cattle during non-grazing periods and maintain ranch buildings and working facilities.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent and 2 years of relevant experience in beef cattle operations.
- Experience in cow-calf or feedlot operations and maintaining detailed records under budgetary constraints.
- Ability to accommodate demands beyond the standard work week and live on-site in provided accommodations.
- Valid driver's license or ability to obtain one by the employment start date.
Nice-to-haves
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Animal Sciences or related field.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Experience with MS Office Suite and agricultural equipment maintenance.
- Familiarity with flood irrigation processes and welding experience.
