About The Position

The Bilingual Program Assistant at Kenwood Elementary is responsible for assisting MPS staff as an interpreter to facilitate health, education, and other services for non-English speaking and bilingual community members. This role aims to support the integration of students and classes while ensuring effective communication between students, parents, and school services.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Driver's License
  • Paraprofessional Certification
  • Associate's degree or completion of 90 quarter or 60 semester college credits in Education or related field
  • 2 years of professional experience in translation and interpretation of English and a designated foreign language
  • Bilingual proficiency in Somali and Spanish or other designated languages.

Responsibilities

  • Assist MPS staff as an interpreter to facilitate educational functions and services to non-English speaking and bilingual community members.
  • Provide interpreter services from English to designated foreign languages, including Somali and Spanish.
  • Translate and interpret English to designated foreign languages while maintaining message content and context.
  • Assist bilingual/bicultural and ESL/ELL families in accessing educational activities and community services.
  • Help bilingual students read and write in English by interpreting terms into their designated foreign language.
  • Collect and record observations on students and maintain their data base and files.
  • Simultaneously interpret and translate questions and answers for ESL/ELL students and parents during school events.
  • Provide culturally relevant information to staff to facilitate understanding of ESL/ELL communities.
  • Facilitate conflict resolution and explain school rules to ESL/ELL students and guardians.
