About the position

The Bilingual Education Teacher is responsible for providing specialized instruction and support to students in grades 6-8, focusing on both Spanish and English language arts. Under the supervision of the school principal, the teacher will develop and implement lesson plans that align with the objectives of the instructional program, as well as the policies and procedures of Chicago Public Schools. This role requires a commitment to fostering an inclusive learning environment that enables limited English proficient students to participate fully in the educational process. The teacher will assess students' language abilities through tests and language assessments, monitor their progress, and maintain accurate records of their achievements. In addition to instructional responsibilities, the Bilingual Education Teacher will establish positive learning expectations and classroom conduct, ensuring a respectful and supportive atmosphere for all students. The teacher will also engage with parents and guardians to discuss students' academic progress and conduct, and may participate in extracurricular activities and field trips. The position requires collaboration with school faculty and administration to develop effective instructional strategies and to promote student attendance and engagement in school programs. The teacher will utilize a variety of instructional materials and contemporary teaching methodologies to enhance student learning and will be expected to participate in professional development opportunities to improve their teaching practices. This role is vital in helping students overcome barriers to learning and in promoting their overall academic success.

Responsibilities

  • Provide specialized instruction and support to students in grades 6-8 in both Spanish and English language arts.
  • Develop and implement lesson plans in accordance with the instructional program and state standards.
  • Administer tests and language assessments to evaluate students' language abilities.
  • Assess students' progress and maintain accurate records of their achievements.
  • Establish positive learning expectations and maintain responsible rules of conduct in the classroom.
  • Communicate with parents and guardians regarding students' academic progress and conduct.
  • Participate in professional development and in-service meetings to improve teaching practices.
  • Coordinate and attend class field trips and engage in extracurricular activities.

Requirements

  • Successful completion of all student teaching requirements and coursework for the appropriate teaching license(s) issued by the Illinois State Board of Education.
  • Possession of the appropriate Illinois State Board of Education issued educator license with a bilingual endorsement in the grade level being taught.
  • Knowledge of subject matter consistent with state certification requirements.
  • Knowledge of contemporary principles and practices of teaching and classroom management techniques.
  • Ability to modify instruction to meet diverse student needs and cooperate with faculty and administration.
