About the position

The Bilingual Education Teacher is responsible for providing specialized instruction and support to students in PreK-3 who are learning English as a second language. Under the supervision of the school principal, the teacher will develop and implement lesson plans that align with the objectives of the instructional program, Chicago Public Schools' policies, Illinois Learning Standards, and applicable state and federal laws. This role involves administering language assessments to evaluate students' language abilities and assessing their progress within the bilingual program. The teacher will create a positive learning environment that encourages student participation and growth, while also maintaining accurate records of student achievements and attendance. In addition to instructional responsibilities, the Bilingual Education Teacher will establish and enforce classroom rules and conduct standards, ensuring a safe and respectful environment for all students. The teacher will communicate regularly with parents and guardians regarding their child's academic progress and behavior, and may also coordinate field trips and participate in extracurricular activities. The role requires collaboration with school faculty and administration to develop effective instructional strategies and improve student attendance. The teacher will also engage in professional development opportunities to enhance their teaching practices and stay informed about new educational techniques. Overall, this position is vital in helping limited English proficient students overcome barriers to their education and achieve success in their academic endeavors.

Responsibilities

  • Provide specialized instruction and support to students in PreK-3 who are learning English as a second language.
  • Develop and implement lesson plans in accordance with instructional program objectives and state standards.
  • Administer tests and language assessments to evaluate students' language abilities.
  • Assess students' progress and maintain accurate records of their achievements.
  • Establish and maintain responsible rules of conduct within the classroom and on school grounds.
  • Communicate with parents and guardians regarding students' academic progress and conduct.
  • Participate in professional development and in-service meetings to improve teaching practices.
  • Coordinate and attend class field trips and participate in extracurricular activities.
  • Utilize community resources to support student learning and engagement.

Requirements

  • Successful completion of all student teaching requirements and coursework for the appropriate teaching license(s) issued by the Illinois State Board of Education.
  • Possession of the appropriate Illinois State Board of Education issued educator license with a bilingual endorsement in the grade level being taught.
  • Knowledge of subject matter consistent with state certification requirements.
  • Knowledge of contemporary principles and practices of teaching and classroom management techniques.
  • Ability to modify instruction to meet diverse student needs.
  • Ability to cooperate with school faculty and administration in developing instructional programs.
  • Good oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills.
  • Skill in exercising sound and professional judgment.
