About the position

The Billing Clerk is responsible for auditing medical, dental, and behavioral health claims for accuracy and ensuring timely electronic submission of these claims through the practice management system. This role also involves managing collections of outstanding claims and maintaining accurate accounts receivable records within the organization's system. The position requires strong communication skills and the ability to handle multiple projects efficiently while adhering to confidentiality and compliance regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Preparation and timely submission of medical, dental, and behavioral health claims.
  • Application of insurance and other payments, and adjustments for accurate patient accounts receivable records.
  • Responsible for collections of insurance and/or patient balances.
  • Review insurance and patient accounts, requesting adjustments and/or refunds as appropriate.
  • Audit data entered in the practice management system for accuracy and report discrepancies to management.
  • Monitor patient accounts receivable aging reports to identify accounts requiring attention.
  • Stay current with information needed for accurate claims submission to Medicaid, Medicare, CHIP, and other third-party payers.
  • Stay updated on rules and regulations for all payers and notify appropriate staff of changes.
  • Appeal and/or resubmit denied or rejected insurance claims.
  • Set up and maintain electronic claims submission software and run required reports.
  • Resolve billing department errors and inform billing manager of accounts receivable issues.
  • Search for ways to improve the accounts receivable process for efficiency.
  • Participate in emergency and disaster response responsibilities as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Three years' work experience in a medical office environment, including work with Medicaid, Medicare, and managed care organizations.
  • Experience with medical and dental terminology, procedural and diagnostic coding (ICD, CPT, CDT, and HCPCS).
  • Knowledge of confidentiality requirements regarding patients and compliance with HIPAA regulations.
  • Good oral and written communication skills, proficient in answering billing questions.
  • Ability to deal professionally and courteously with the public and all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to operate computer, copier, fax, and 10-key machine.
  • Proficient in practice management system and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Basic accounting knowledge.
  • Bilingual in Spanish.

Nice-to-haves

  • Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) experience preferred.
  • Experience with ICD-10.
