About the position
The Billing and Reimbursement Specialist I at Tulane University Center for Brain Health (TUCBH) is responsible for verifying medical insurance benefits and ensuring program sustainability through timely prior authorization processes. This role focuses on supporting former military personnel with Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and Behavioral Health (BH) conditions, ensuring they receive appropriate insurance coverage and assistance with their healthcare needs.
Responsibilities
- Verify medical insurance benefits through communication with private insurance companies, Medicare, Medicaid, TriCare, and VA.
- Coordinate and communicate with patients regarding their insurance benefits and medical provider programs.
- Re-verify existing patient insurance coverage and determine insurance compatibility with healthcare provider programming.
- Obtain pre-certification or authorization for patient services.
- Monitor incoming and outgoing referrals and follow internal referral management policies.
- Answer telephones, direct calls, and take and deliver messages in Epic.
- Ensure excellent customer service by demonstrating a caring and professional disposition with all customer relations.
- Perform miscellaneous duties to support administrative operations of the practice.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum of two years experience in healthcare business office operations.
- Familiarity with governmental billing rules and regulations and third-party billing requirements.
- Knowledge and experience with ICD9 and CPT4 coding.
- Experience with personal computers and Microsoft Office skills.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and meet deadlines.
- Well-developed judgment and decision-making abilities.
Nice-to-haves
- Three years' physicians billing experience.
- Knowledge of group medical practice.
- Experience with compiling and analyzing data.
- Knowledge of IDX physicians' billing software.
