About the position

The Biological Science Technician (Biochemistry) position at the Department of Agriculture involves supporting wildlife biology and genetics management programs. The role primarily focuses on conducting laboratory experiments, utilizing standard genetic techniques, and analyzing data to inform species and population studies. This is a temporary full-time position with opportunities for hands-on experience in biochemistry and genetics within a research environment.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine laboratory experiments using standardized practices.
  • Set up DNA testing assays using specialized laboratory equipment.
  • Conduct DNA extractions, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and gel electrophoresis.
  • Analyze experimental data and perform statistical manipulations.
  • Summarize data accurately for reporting purposes.
  • Assist in laying out experiments for studies and pilot tests.
  • Select appropriate tests on DNA samples to inform species and population data.
  • Maintain comprehensive records of DNA data obtained.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship or U.S. National status.
  • One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least GS-4 grade level; OR a bachelor's degree with at least 24 semester hours in relevant courses.
  • At least 6 semester hours of courses must be directly related to the position.
  • Successful completion of a full course of study of at least 12 months in a school for clinical laboratory technicians may substitute for the required experience.
