About the position

The Biological Science Technician (Fisheries) position is a temporary role designed to assist permanent staff at Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks. The role involves conducting various field activities related to fisheries management, including the removal of nonnative fish, conducting surveys, and collecting environmental data. The position requires physical exertion and the ability to work in rugged mountainous terrain, with a focus on aquatic ecology and wildlife management.

Responsibilities

  • Remove nonnative fish from alpine lakes.
  • Complete visual encounter surveys for amphibians and reptiles.
  • Set, clean, and repair gill nets.
  • Electro-fish in streams.
  • Conduct fish, amphibian, and reptile surveys.
  • Collect field data and record environmental parameters.
  • Provide project overviews to park visitors.
  • Interact with the public regarding fisheries management issues (GS-05 level).
  • Train other technicians, interns, and volunteers (GS-05 level).

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship required.
  • Must be at least 18 years old or 16 years old with specific educational qualifications.
  • Ability to hike in rugged mountainous backcountry above 7000 ft elevation for extended periods while carrying heavy backpacks (at least 50 lbs).
  • Experience in aquatic ecology, wildlife, or fisheries work.
  • Ability to collect and record biological data in a field setting.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with scuba diving or operating a boat.
  • Knowledge of fishery biology and ecology.
