About the position

The Biological Science Technician position at the USGS involves supporting research on fire and fuel treatments within the Forest and Rangeland Ecosystem Science Center. The role includes conducting vegetation surveys, data management, and literature reviews, contributing to the conservation and management of natural resources in the Pacific Northwest and Intermountain West ecosystems.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in literature reviews related to fire and fuel treatments.
  • Enter and organize data collected from field surveys.
  • Conduct vegetation surveys, including identifying plant species and collecting biomass samples.
  • Ensure data quality control and effective data management.
  • Navigate to remote study sites using maps and GPS technology.
  • Drive on poor and sometimes muddy 4WD roads to access field sites.
  • Conduct sample processing and laboratory work as required.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of standard plant survey techniques and applied ecology.
  • Familiarity with fire science and fuel management practices.
  • Ability to identify plant species, particularly in the Great Basin region.
  • Experience with data entry and organization.
  • Physical ability to perform fieldwork in rough and rocky terrain.

Nice-to-haves

  • Current First Aid/CPR certifications or willingness to obtain them prior to employment.
