About The Position

The Biologist 1-3 position at the Office of Wildlife in Lake Charles, LA, is an entry-level role focused on wildlife management and habitat stewardship. Requirements

  • A baccalaureate degree in a biological science, marine science, environmental science, wildlife or fisheries management, animal science, forestry, natural resources, or conservation.
  • Working knowledge of wildlife management techniques.
  • Good observational and analytical skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Problem-solving skills and a strong work ethic.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with habitat management projects.
  • Familiarity with state and federal wildlife regulations.
  • Ability to engage with private landowners effectively.

Responsibilities

  • Perform daily operations on 7 Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs) in Southwest Louisiana.
  • Conduct habitat management activities and bag checks.
  • Provide hunting season recommendations and interact with technician staff and the public.
  • Offer technical assistance through site visits and habitat management plans.
  • Advise landowners on financial assistance available through the Farm Bill and other funding mechanisms.
  • Write brochures and perform Wetland Reserve Easement monitoring.
  • Transport injured or nuisance animals and conduct public meetings.
  • Collaborate with state and federal agencies and non-government organizations.
  • Investigate and report black bear incidents.
  • Manage data and conduct browse surveys for the Deer Management Assistance Program.
  • Coordinate and perform trapping, data collection, and banding of turkey, dove, and waterfowl.
  • Conduct surveys for dove, quail, and turkey.
  • Perform deer collections for herd health and breeding data.
  • Sample for Chronic Wasting Disease in whitetail deer.
  • Administer alligator harvest programs.
