About the position

The Science Teacher is responsible for developing in each pupil an awareness of the role of science in economic and social progress. The teacher will motivate students to acquire knowledge of scientific facts and principles, and skills in scientific methods of problem solving. The role also involves discovering and developing special talents of pupils in science, engineering, and technology.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitates learning of science through inquiry-based approach where students ask questions, make observations, test ideas, think creatively and apply their knowledge.
  • Designs lesson plans and learning activities anchored in phenomena while focusing on the 3 dimensions: Science and Engineering Practices, Crosscutting Concepts and Disciplinary Core Ideas.
  • Provides students with time, space, and resources to learn science through use of scientific apparatus, investigations, models, graphic organizers, and other instructional aides.
  • Instructs pupils in proper use, care and safe handling of chemicals, science equipment, and plant and animal life.
  • Provides for safe storage and proper use of science materials and equipment.
  • Designs a program of study that meets the individual needs, interests, knowledge and abilities of the students.
  • Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students.
  • Establishes clearly defined objectives for all lessons, units, projects, and learning activities; and communicates objectives to students according to individual needs and abilities.
  • Supports the program of study, using a variety of instructional strategies, instructional media and assessments.
  • Assesses the progress of students on a regular basis, and provides progress reports.
  • Analyzes and uses appropriate data to guide instruction and develop formative and summative assessments.
  • Recognizes potential learning disabilities of students and seeks the assistance of qualified personnel.
  • Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required by Tennessee Board of Education, district policy, and school-level administration.
  • Assists the administration in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct.
  • Develops reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedure, and maintains order in the classroom in a fair and just manner.
  • Supervises pupils at school related functions to include on and off campus activities.
  • Makes provision for being available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day when required or requested.
  • Plans, supervises, and provides guidance for teacher aide(s) and volunteer(s).
  • Provides detailed plans for substitute teachers including lessons, schedules and rules regarding classroom organization, procedures and individual student needs.
  • Attends and participates in faculty, department and/or grade level meetings and serves on committees upon request.
  • Maintains professional competence through professional learning activities provided by the school district.
  • Maintains a standard of performance and conduct as required by state, law, local board of education and community expectations.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
  • A valid Tennessee Teacher's Certificate with the appropriate endorsement.
  • Successful student teaching experience.
  • Highly Qualified in harmony with the NCLB Act of 2001.
