About the position

The Biomaterials Co-op position at Arthrex is designed for students pursuing a Bachelor's degree in relevant fields such as Biomedical Engineering or Material Science. This full-time role involves supporting Biomaterials studies and testing, focusing on the mechanical and polymeric behavior of medical products. The co-op will engage in various laboratory tasks, including sample preparation, testing, and data analysis, contributing to regulatory submissions and product development projects.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare samples for present or future testing using various tools and instrumentation.
  • Perform regular pH testing to monitor and maintain incubation parameters.
  • Cut and weigh test samples for subsequent testing.
  • Chemically prepare samples for testing under a fume hood.
  • Operate a centrifuge and viscometer for viscosity testing.
  • Use a materials testing machine to mechanically test samples.
  • Document sample preparation and test methods using a camera.
  • Conduct quantitative and qualitative material characterization using microscopes or FTIR spectrometers.
  • Collaborate with Biomaterials team members and communicate with study stakeholders.
  • Perform scientific literature searches and statistical analysis on sample groups.
  • Write and submit scientific test reports and compile PowerPoint presentations of findings.
  • Maintain laboratory organization and cleanliness, complying with safety instructions.

Requirements

  • Enrolled as a full-time student pursuing a Bachelor's Degree in Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Polymer Science, Material Science, or a related discipline.
  • GPA of 3.0 or higher.
  • Coursework or prior work experience in a laboratory setting is advantageous.
  • Prior experience with mechanical testing, statistics, or technical writing is a plus.
  • Good communication skills, both written and verbal, and good documentation practices.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with mechanical testing involving tensile testing.
  • Familiarity with statistical analysis and technical writing.
