About the position

The Biomedical Engineer, Mechanical Design and Fabrication position at United Therapeutics focuses on developing innovative technology for creating 3D printed, bioengineered lung scaffolds intended for transplantation. The role involves designing and fabricating bioreactor prototypes, collaborating with internal teams and vendors, and ensuring the reproducibility and biocompatibility of bioreactor parts. This position is integral to the Organ Manufacturing group, contributing to the mission of advancing organ manufacturing technologies.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with supervisors to design and fabricate new bioreactor-related prototypes using appropriate materials and methods to support tissue engineering efforts
  • Work with vendors to identify a path from prototyping to manufacturing of bioreactor parts at scale with focus on reproducibility, biocompatibility and maintenance of sterile conditions
  • Collaborate with internal partners, assist in solving emerging problems in our existing and emerging bioreactor systems
  • Record and manage inventory and use of materials needed to assemble bioreactors
  • Provide training sessions regarding upgrades, features, and functionality of bioreactors
  • Prepare reports, technical documents and SOP for internal and external use
  • Report and present data to other team members individually and at group meetings
  • Meet 1:1 with managers to review results and progress
  • Perform all other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering or industrial design and 2+ years of relevant post-Bachelor's degree industry experience OR Master's Degree in biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering, or industrial design
  • Strong 3D CAD Solid Modeling
  • Prototyping and 3D printing experience
  • Familiarity with mechanical fabrication and outsourcing
  • Knowledge of fluid flow mechanics and heat transfer
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and documentations
  • Good documentation practices
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate in English
  • Excellent analytical, problem solving, and troubleshooting skills

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with perfusion-based bioreactors
  • Understanding of sensors and control systems
  • Computational fluid dynamics experiences (CFD)
