About the position

The Biomedical Engineer position at BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina involves assessing new Durable Medical Equipment Prosthetics/Orthotics and Supplies (DMEPOS) products and technology. The role is crucial for facilitating pricing, coding, and classification of DMEPOS items and services, while ensuring compliance with regulations and maintaining relevant data. This position requires collaboration with various stakeholders, including the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and Medicare Administrative Contractors (MACs).

Responsibilities

  • Conduct technology assessments of medical devices and supplies.
  • Draft reports for pricing, coding, and classification of DMEPOS items and services.
  • Assess comparability and costs of new DMEPOS items and technology.
  • Initiate comprehensive technology assessments for up to ten products per year.
  • Coordinate efforts of additional staff and subcontractors for technology assessments.
  • Review Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) applications and participate in CMS HCPCS Workgroup meetings.
  • Coordinate with law enforcement on DMEPOS technology assessments during investigations.
  • Participate in conference calls with CMS, DME MACs, and UPICs for guidance on Orthotic/Prosthetic matters.
  • Provide guidance on DMEPOS technology assessments to personnel and stakeholders.

Requirements

  • Masters degree in Biomedical Engineering or Bioengineering.
  • Five years of experience in bioengineering or biomedical engineering positions.
  • Experience in conducting technology assessments, including assessing the cost of medical devices and products.
  • Working knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, database, and presentation software.
  • Ability to work independently and prioritize effectively.
  • Good judgment skills and demonstrated customer service abilities.
  • Strong organizational and presentation skills.
  • Analytical critical thinking and math skills for data analysis and reporting.
  • Ability to persuade, negotiate, or influence others.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with engineering and/or testing of Durable Medical Equipment (DME).
  • Knowledge and experience in neurophysiology.
  • Experience with or knowledge of Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) or certification in Medical Coding.
