About the position

The Biomedical Engineer position at the Department of Veterans Affairs is primarily responsible for leading projects that involve the design, implementation, and maintenance of medical equipment and health information systems throughout their life-cycle. This role requires collaboration with clinical staff to translate their needs into technical specifications and involves conducting market research, vendor evaluations, and security risk assessments related to medical devices.

Responsibilities

  • Spearhead projects involving the design, implementation, and maintenance of medical equipment and health information systems.
  • Collaborate with clinical staff to define and establish their needs, translating clinical requirements into technical specifications.
  • Conduct market research and vendor evaluations for various types of medical devices and systems.
  • Perform security risk assessments and arrange vendor installations.
  • Follow up on deficiencies with manufacturers, logistics, and contracting.
  • Manage all aspects of Medical Device Isolation Architecture (MDIA) and associated initiatives.
  • Interface with Information Technology and Information Security Officers for network configuration and remote access, addressing pre-implementation security issues.
  • Prepare for ACLs and VLAN in accordance with IEC 80001 risk management for IT networks incorporating medical device standards.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Bachelor's Degree or higher in Engineering from an accredited institution, or certification as a Certified Clinical Engineer (CCE).
  • At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level, including participation in medical device hazard investigations and development of equipment management programs.
  • Ability to conduct medical equipment management compliant with healthcare standards and regulatory agencies.
  • Ability to develop a curriculum for a continuing education program addressing the safe and effective use of medical technology.
  • Ability to manage a recall and safety alert program for medical devices.
  • Ability to conduct capital asset and infrastructure planning for medical equipment.
  • Ability to function as a subject matter expert in biomedical engineering, supporting specialized clinical technology.
  • Knowledge of computer-based medical systems, networking protocols, and information security as it applies to medical technology.
