About The Position

The Biomedical Equipment Support Specialist at the VA Maryland Health Care System provides clinical and administrative support for the lifecycle management of medical equipment. This role involves applying engineering and mechanical concepts to enhance clinical care delivered by healthcare professionals. The specialist coordinates with various departments to ensure the effective operation and maintenance of medical systems, adhering to safety codes and regulatory standards.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Associate's degree in Biomedical Electronics Technology or related field and two years of relevant experience, or a Bachelor's degree in Biomedical Engineering Technology or related field, or military training in biomedical equipment with two years of experience.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English is mandatory.
  • Knowledge of a wide range of sciences including electronics, computer science, and mechanical engineering is essential.
  • Ability to perform advanced testing and troubleshooting of medical devices and their interfaces.

Nice To Haves

  • Certification as a Certified Biomedical Equipment Technician (CBET) or similar is desirable but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the lifecycle of medical systems including imaging, life support, dialysis, and monitoring equipment.
  • Coordinate with facility support departments such as Facilities Management, IT, and Patient Safety.
  • Maintain knowledge of safety codes and standards from regulatory bodies like The Joint Commission and FDA.
  • Document all maintenance work in the computerized maintenance management system according to regulatory requirements.
  • Apply basic networking principles to resolve communication issues in medical systems.
  • Adhere to VA Medical Device Cyber Security policies throughout the equipment lifecycle.
  • Load operating systems and clinical application software as needed.
  • Respond to network incidents and maintain appropriate certification levels as a Contracting Officer Representative.
  • Collaborate with Logistics and Contracting to procure parts and services, and oversee vendor work.
  • Investigate and document medical device recalls and safety alerts in a timely manner.
  • Stay updated on advancements in medical technology and provide training to clinical staff.
  • Mentor peers and provide technical training as needed.
