About the position

The Biomedical Equipment Support Specialist (BESS) in Biomedical Information Systems provides clinical and administrative support for the lifecycle management of networks and networked medical equipment within the Veterans Health Administration. This role involves applying engineering and mechanical concepts to ensure the proper functioning and maintenance of diagnostic and therapeutic devices, as well as monitoring systems.

Responsibilities

  • Identify and troubleshoot issues related to VLAN configuration, IP addressing, sub-netting, HL7, DICOM, Access Control List (ACL), and network security across the medical device network.
  • Manage, troubleshoot, and maintain systems of computerized networks, databases, and servers, including biomedical information systems that store or facilitate patient information.
  • Implement and plan for new and emerging technologies, including diagnostic modalities and network management.
  • Lead the development of disaster recovery procedures for critical systems in the event of device failure.
  • Install, maintain, modify, troubleshoot, repair, and calibrate complex therapeutic, diagnostic, and life support medical devices and systems.
  • Investigate, remedy, and document recalls and safety alerts within established timeframes.
  • Provide training and education to medical technology end users and clinical staff.
  • Represent the Biomedical/Clinical Engineering department on committees and in meetings as delegated by the supervisor.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Associate's degree in Biomedical Electronics Technology, Biomedical Equipment Technology, Biomedical Engineering Technology, or a related technical field, plus two years of relevant experience; or a Bachelor's degree in Biomedical Engineering Technology or a related field; or completion of a military training program in biomedical equipment with two years of relevant experience.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment physical examination and drug test.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with TCP/IP, HL7, networking, network security, and DICOM standards.
  • Current knowledge of computer virus protection software and information security tools.
  • Expert knowledge of electronics, computer, and networking theory.
