About the position

The position involves leading and overseeing quantitative staff and operations within the Biostatistics Core at Duke University School of Medicine. The role requires collaboration with clinical investigators and quantitative scientists to provide statistical support for research projects, ensuring high-quality analysis and interpretation of data. The candidate will also mentor junior biostatisticians and contribute to educational initiatives within the department.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as primary statistical advisor/mentor for staff biostatisticians in BERD collaborations
  • Work with BERD collaboration leadership to identify how staff can add more value to the organization
  • Teach junior biostatisticians to communicate statistical concepts in the context of research
  • Engage with scientific questions and translate ideas from clinical collaborators into statistical considerations
  • Perform literature reviews for advanced statistical methodology
  • Lead data initiatives within RDAC
  • Assist in leading education-related initiatives within RDAC
  • Communicate consistently with confidence to collaborators and leadership
  • Recognize and resolve potential statistical and operational risks
  • Give oral presentations of results at meetings
  • Disseminate knowledge within professional communities
  • Manage multiple concurrent projects independently
  • Develop and manage new collaborations and grant submissions

Requirements

  • Doctoral degree in (bio)statistics or related field with 0-2 years of relevant experience, or a master's degree with 4 years of relevant experience, or a bachelor's degree with 6 years of relevant experience
  • Experience as a lead statistician on clinical trials or research projects
  • Thorough experience with SAS and solid command of the English language
  • Strong technical writing skills
  • Experience in preparation of grant proposals and academic manuscripts

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with Stata and R
  • Prior supervision of lower-level employees
  • Multiple and varied prior trial/project experiences
