About The Position

The Neighborhood Navigator & Building Strong Families Specialist at La Familia Counseling Center is a part-time role focused on supporting African American families in South Sacramento. This position involves acting as a cultural advocate and resource navigator, helping families access essential services and support. The role is divided equally between two key functions: serving as a Neighborhood Navigator and a Building Strong Families Specialist, both aimed at fostering community connections and improving family well-being through culturally responsive advocacy.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • At least one year of experience working in a community support or advocacy role.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in English.
  • Experience working with diverse populations, especially African American communities.
  • Cultural awareness and the ability to communicate with respect and dignity across cultural differences.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize and manage time effectively.
  • Proficient in using computers and technology for documentation and data entry.
  • Must own a vehicle and have a valid California Driver's License along with automobile liability insurance.
  • Must pass a background check through the Department of Justice.

Nice To Haves

  • Bilingual in Spanish is a plus.
  • Experience in outreach, supportive services, childhood development, and cultural diversity is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a cultural advocate to help African American families build stronger connections with service providers and institutions.
  • Work closely with the FRC Intervention Specialist to identify and connect families to resources that meet their unique needs.
  • Attend case staffing, family conferences, and other meetings to ensure services are delivered with cultural respect.
  • Model positive behaviors to reduce bias and break down barriers for African American families.
  • Advocate for improved access to African American infant and maternal health resources by coordinating referrals and educational opportunities.
  • Collaborate with community partners to ensure African American families have access to programs that address chronic stress.
  • Work to eliminate disparities by advocating for African American men, women, and children in need of resources.
  • Lead outreach efforts that promote the health and well-being of African American families.
  • Link families to crisis intervention services and work with professionals to offer timely support.
  • Help families navigate complex systems, such as schools and courts, providing cultural interpretation to reduce misunderstandings.
  • Conduct assessments to evaluate the strengths, risks, and needs of families referred to the BSF program.
  • Complete both baseline and post-assessments, review the results with families, and ensure accurate data entry.
  • Develop personalized support plans for families and connect them to community resources that align with their goals.
  • Build relationships with schools, hospitals, and community organizations to promote the BSF program and extend its reach to families in need.
  • Facilitate workshops at the Family Resource Center and participate in weekly supervision meetings and relevant training to stay up to date on best practices.
