About the position

The Blood Donor Phlebotomist at Houston Methodist Hospital is responsible for collecting whole blood and donor apheresis products while adhering to established protocols. This role involves performing pre-donation screenings, processing blood components, and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards for blood banks and donor centers. The position emphasizes teamwork, effective communication, and maintaining a safe and organized work environment.

Responsibilities

  • Collect whole blood and donor apheresis products by established protocols.
  • Perform pre-donation screening and evaluate donor/patient medical history.
  • Process whole blood into components as needed according to regulatory requirements.
  • Document donor visits and ensure accurate registration and processing of blood components.
  • Monitor patients/donors for adverse effects during donation and report any unusual occurrences.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area, ensuring all supplies are stocked.
  • Participate in departmental projects and seek continuing education opportunities.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • 2 years of experience in whole blood collection, including phlebotomy and donor apheresis.
  • BLS Certification (Basic Life Support) required.
  • Knowledge of venipuncture techniques and blood collection procedures.
  • Strong organizational and data entry skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Certification as a Phlebotomy Technician (CPT, PBT(ASCP), or equivalent) preferred.
  • Experience with Laboratory Information Systems.
