About the position

The Blood Donor Technician position at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) involves working under the general supervision of the Nurse Manager at the Blood Donor Center. The primary responsibilities include performing donor registration, screening, and whole blood collection, as well as automated platelet and red blood cell apheresis collections. The technician is also responsible for the preparation of components from collected whole blood, ensuring compliance with all applicable state and federal regulations, as well as hospital policies and procedures. This role emphasizes the importance of providing excellent customer service while balancing production, donor care, and quality requirements to meet annual blood collection goals. The technician must adhere to safety and infection control techniques, maintain confidentiality of donor information, and exhibit professionalism in attire and grooming. The position also includes a generous sign-on bonus of $3,000, which will be discussed during the interview process.

Responsibilities

  • Perform donor registration and screening processes.
  • Conduct whole blood phlebotomy and automated apheresis donations.
  • Label sample tubes and collection packs accurately.
  • Complete all necessary records and perform post-collection handling of products per FDA guidelines.
  • Prepare components in the component prep lab through centrifugation, separation, mixing, and labeling.
  • Record results of all procedures performed using Current Good Manufacturing Practices.
  • Perform appropriate Quality Control and Preventive Maintenance procedures.
  • Assist other donor center staff in managing reactions and medical emergencies.
  • Maintain equipment and stock supplies both in-house and on the buses.
  • Provide support and education to donors and the public.

Requirements

  • Medical Assistant certificate or phlebotomy training desired.
  • National Phlebotomy Certification desired.
  • CPR certificate desired.
  • Previous patient/donor care experience or experience within a patient care or blood donor setting preferred.
  • Proficiency in a second language desired.
