About the position

The Bookstore Associate position at B is for Books, a free children's bookstore operated by Reading Ready Pittsburgh, is a part-time role focused on supporting the healthy development of young children through increased access to books and family engagement in reading. The associate will work under the supervision of the Program Director and will be responsible for managing the bookstore on Saturdays from 10 AM to 2 PM. The role involves greeting patrons, assisting them in locating books, and sharing information about the Reading Ready Pittsburgh programs. The associate will also be tasked with stocking shelves, cleaning the bookstore, and assisting with educator requests for book pickups and donations. Additionally, the associate will participate in special events such as author readings and community engagement activities. The ideal candidate will have a passion for children's literature and experience working with young children. They should possess good social skills, excellent oral communication abilities, and the capacity to work both independently and collaboratively. The position requires physical stamina, as the associate will need to lift and carry boxes of books weighing up to 30 pounds. The role is vital in creating a welcoming environment for families and children, promoting literacy and community involvement.

Responsibilities

  • Greet patrons entering the bookstore and assist in locating books or other materials.
  • Share Reading Ready Pittsburgh program information with patrons.
  • Stock shelves with books and clean the bookstore, including dusting shelves and sweeping floors.
  • Assist in educator request book pickups and book donation drop-offs.
  • Work special events such as author readings and engage with the community.
  • Sort, clean, count, and repair donated books.

Requirements

  • 0 - 3 years of previous experience in a similar role.
  • High School Degree or equivalent.
  • General computer skills.
  • Experience with young children and a passion for children's literature.
  • Experience in a retail environment preferred.
