About the position

The Breastfeeding Peer Counselor plays a vital role in promoting breastfeeding among WIC participants and the community. This position involves providing support, education, and encouragement to prenatal and breastfeeding participants, while also participating in community outreach and training initiatives. The counselor operates within the defined scope of practice and collaborates with multidisciplinary teams to develop service plans for WIC participants.

Responsibilities

  • Promotes breastfeeding among WIC participants, health care workers, and the community.
  • Provides breastfeeding encouragement, information, and counsel to prenatal and breastfeeding participants.
  • Conducts support group meetings and assists the nutritionist with individual and group sessions.
  • Contacts participants at predetermined intervals to provide counsel and encouragement to maintain lactation.
  • Identifies problems necessitating referral to the nutritionist or WIC Designated Breastfeeding Expert (DBE).
  • Recruits participants to attend nutrition education classes through various contact methods.
  • Maintains logs of patient contacts and completes monthly activity reports and other required forms.
  • Plans and participates in community outreach events, particularly during Breastfeeding Awareness Month.
  • Creates and maintains a breastfeeding-friendly environment.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated working knowledge of basic breastfeeding management, manual expression of breast milk, and collection and storage of human milk.
  • Demonstrated skill in effective communication.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of basic human lactation and breastfeeding practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to instruct in a group and individual setting.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bilingual in English/Spanish.
  • Previous or current participation in the WIC Program.
  • Breastfed at least one baby for at least 6 months.
